Kids Runway for Research
Seven years and still going strong
Seven years have passed since our first event and we have been able to donate over $80,000 to the childhood cancer research program at the Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. At the conception of Kids Runway for Research (KRFR) co-founder Patricia Miller was a social worker with the Division of Hematology/ Oncology at Nemours/ Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. Patricia is now a Physician Assistant in Palliative Care at Christiana Hospital. KRFR co-founder Sandi Patterson is the owner of a vintage boutique called Clothes in the Past Lane. She has recently moved her brick and mortar boutique to the internet. Sandi has always believed in businesses giving back to the community and had previously held events for a national cancer society. Both Patricia and Sandi saw a need to focus on Pediatric Cancer Research. They then started the non-profit Kids Runway for Research and the rest is history.
Kids Runway for Research has 12 non paid volunteers that form the KRFR steering committee in addition to other team members and many volunteers making it possible to carry out our mission of raising funds and awareness for childhood cancer research. We hold small events throughout the year but our premier event is the annual fashion show event, which is always held in September to honor Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. This is our 7th annual fashion show event and we have come a long way since our first show in 2010 with 25 models to today’s shows with over 50 models who are all childhood cancer survivors!
All of our funds raised go directly to Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders encompasses both clinical and research hematology/oncology programs. We donate exclusively to the childhood cancer research program within this center here in Delaware. We strongly believe in continuing to keep the funds that KRFR raises local since Nemours is doing incredible work right here in Delaware’s own backyard to help find a cure for these devastating diseases. There are many different kinds of childhood cancer and in process of searching for a cure for each and every one of these types of cancer we hope for the discovery of more tolerable treatments without the serious side effects that the various chemotherapy has on our children. We hope that new treatments will be discovered that will allow children with cancer to grow up healthy and happy with no serious, long-term side effects. This amazing local research facility is in great need of continued support.
